Emma the Easter Fairy

Rainbow Magic Special Edition: Emma the Easter Fairy by Daisy Meadows

This is an extra long fairy book. Three magic eggs have been stolen by the goblins, messing up easter. One makes candy taste good, another makes easter eggs look pretty (and not be rotten). The last does something else useful. They find those from the goblins (often by having the goblins fight each other.). They also find the easter bunny at the end. There is not a whole lot of drama in this book. It seems to be pretty easy to get each egg after a brief goblin skirmish.  The goblins do have some interesting costumes that they use for disguise. It is a little unclear why things would be bad when the egg is sitting near, but good when the egg is back in fairyland.

Storm the Lightning Fairy

Storm the Lightning Fairy by Daisy Meadows

Storm is a more destructive fairy and this book has greater action than other fairy books. The girls all try to go to fairy size to make it harder for the goblin to hit them with lightning bolts. They find that fairy magic will bounce back off mirrors, so they trick the goblin into throwing a bolt at he mirror, causing it to go back and strike him. There is also a "food munching" dinosaur in the museum that helps bring about the goblins demise.

Shannon the Ocean Fairy

Shannon the Ocean Fairy (Rainbow Magic Special Edition) by Daisy Meadows

This is an extra long fairy book that has three "sections" that appear similar to normal fairy books. The girls get invited to a fairy luau, but then things start to go wrong. The tides are coming in to far and other weather is not doing what it is supposed to. The goblins have stolen three magic pearls that control the weather. The girls and Shannon travel under the sea to find the pearls and fix the weather. Before each time, the weather seems to get really bad in both the fairy and human world. They complete the quest go going to Hawaii where the last pearl is making big waves. It is a longer story with the goblins seemingly falling over quickly when the fairies arrive.

Emily the Emerald Fairy (Jewel Fairies 3)

Emily the Emerald Fairy (Jewel Fairies 3) by Daisy Meadows

The girls are in the toy story with Dad. Father wants to go explore the trains (as much for a gift as for himself.) The girls notice some magic. Then they find Emily the Emerald fairy. They know her jewel must be nearby. They find it in a stuffed cat's eye. Just as they are about to get  it, a goblin swoops down in a toy airplane and graps the stuffed cat. They have plenty of fun using some toys and a bit of fairy magic to finally get the stuffed cat and the emerald. Then they find dad, who now has plans for a train set of his own. The toy shop setting makes for a fun goblin fight sequence.

Coral the Reef Fairy (The Earth Fairies #4)

Coral the Reef Fairy (The Earth Fairies #4) by Daisy Meadows

The original UK version of the series was the "green fairies", but the US is always a bit different. The girls are at a beach earth festival. They run into Coral who wants to get her wand back from the Goblins. The shrink to a small size and swimming in the ocean. They ask a Clown Fish if he has seen the goblins. The catch is that the clown fish really is a clown and can't stop telling jokes. Once they do get an answer from him, they are able to find the goblins. The goblins are playing around the reef, damaging it in the process. Tourists are also causing damage. (However, they are not so intentional and the fairies can do work to stop them.) The girls and fairy finally get the goblin to let go of the wand by pulling him to the jellyfish. Now all is well in fairyland. The does provide some information on how to care for coral, but other than that it is a fairly typical one for the series.

Heather the Violet Fairy: Rainbow Magic Rainbow Fairies Book #7:

Heather the Violet Fairy: Rainbow Magic Rainbow Fairies Book #7 by Daisy Meadows

The girls are ending their time on Rainspell island. They see a fairy trapped in a painting, but they are in the middle of a carnival. Luckily people are lured away by clowns. They rescue her and bring her to the pot at the end of the rainbow. It seems they are all together and ready to be brought back to fairy land. Alas, Jack Frost is not going to make it easy. They trap him in a bubble, but then realize they need him to have winter, so they trap him in a snow globe to bring him back with them to fairy land. The fairies make it back home, and the girls end their vacation on the island. This is a bit different than the standard rainbow magic tale as it a wraps things up.

Little, Big: or, The Fairies' Parliament

Little, Big is a long fantasy novel. I don't do good with long fantasy. Why did I read it? It did come highly recommended. The story centers on people that live in Edgewood. They are a little bit "odd". At first this just seems the tale of some different people. However, gradually more fantastical elements pop up. There are bits about fairies. Somebody also makes a seemingly normal journey to the city. He is a fish out of water that eventually adapts to city life. It seems normal at first, but then also becomes fantastical. He ends up writing for a popular soap opera after the world fades. There is a war with Charlemagne as president. The odd people can help to make the world back to a better place. I think the problem I have with the fantasy is that the "real" people interactions don't feel real enough. When the fantastical is added, it makes it even more out of the realm of normal. If I didn't care before, I care even less now. And why do all fantasy works seem to involve an imminent end of the world that only a few people can help prevent? This novel does actually take place mostly in our world, so that is a plus. Though the soap opera as real life does seem a little trite.
