Earth Revisited

Earth Revisited by Byron Alden Brooks

A man from the 19th century wakes up in 1992. He is in a different body with a different woman (Helen) that reminds him of his early love, Theresa. Helen tries to nurse him back to health, thinking he is delirious. The world he lives in is a spiritualist socialist Utopia. There is no war. People live by Christian virtues, but there are no churches. There are interesting new technologies like a "tone telegraph". The book got more modern technologies wrong than it got right. It also spent a long time exploring the spirituality of the Utopian world.

The Planet's Most Spiritual Places

The Planet's Most Spiritual Places by Malcolm Croft

This book would probably work better as a coffee table book than an e-book. There aare many places covered, each with pictures and a short description. There are a few different sections. Some are actual modern places of worship. Others are ancient sites that once were significant places of worship, but now are more tourist sites. Others are natural areas. It can be interesting, though there is a significant bit of editorializing.

The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest for an Inspired Life

People have devoted energy to spirituality throughout history. Science often considers this a wasted effort. However, new research has been showing the way that religion and spirituality provide mental health benefits. There is also a strong relationship between spirituality and depression. Being spiritual can help counteract the negative of depression. There also seems to be a genetic aspect to spirituality.

The concept of spirituality can be vague. It does not necessarily correspond with going through the motions at church. It involves living and experiencing the selflessness. There is also a difference between focussing on the goal-oriented nature of achievement versus submitting oneself to the spiritual. The first can lead to depression that one has difficulty overcoming on your own, while a belief in a higher power helps to provide more positive outcomes.

Related to spirituality to book discusses the importance of letting people express their feelings and think for themselves, even if that is not the clinical norm. There is often very different diagnoses for the same person by different professionals. Sometimes it works best to set back and let people work through problems themselves. Even if they provide unscientific explanations, these may be the helpful answers they need.

Practicing the Power of Now: Essential Teachings, Meditations, and Exercises from the Power of Now

This is a short audiobook about ways to experience the "power of now". The theme is to focus on Now, not the past or the future. It includes a lot of imagery from religions such as Christianity. (There is talk of parallels to crucifixion and giving up things for the better.) His voice on the book sounds like a German New Age philosopher. It feels like a New Age adaptation of religious principals.
