Sorrow and Bliss: A Novel by Meg Mason
A woman suffers from a mysterious mental illness, X. Her mother knew this early on, but never told her. The woman's marriage fell apart. She was intent on drawing attention to her self-destruction rather than trying to overcome it or caring about others. It goes on for a bit too long and using an unnamed mental illness feels like a cop-out.
