What is the origin of toys? Some toys were created originally as something to play with. Others were originally created with a practical purpose in mind, but later became a toy. Some have had very long evolution, while others have evolved quickly. This book takes a wide view of toys, with things such as play-dough (originally a wallpaper cleaner) and slinkies (originally an attempt for gyroscopes.) Board games are also covered in detail. Many seem to have struggled along until they suddenly became very popular. Even toys had their purpose changed. The creator of Lionel trains originally pitched it to a toy store as a knick knack that could show the toys. Eventually the train itself became the center of attention.
