The Ship of the Dead: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book 3

I did a quick reread of Hammer of Thor before reading this. However, it was probably not necessary. They go on a big adventure. They beat giants and other assorted bad guys. Magnus has a romance with Alex when she is a genderfluid girl, but also sees it carry when Alex identifies as male. (Alex is a child of Loki the shapeshifter.) There is a ship made out of the nail clippings of dead sailors. Pretty gross. But, this is Norse mythology. Loki gets free, but they do get him back in prison. There are plenty of adventures and fun.

The Sword of Summer: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book One

Magnus Chase is your run of the mill homeless teenager in Boston. He has been hanging out on the street since his mother died. Then things get weird. He discovers that his father is a Norse god. He also dies a few times. But, ends up in Valhalla instead of dead. His homeless friends are also connected to the Norse. They go on all sorts of rolicking adventures and end up on the good side of Odin. It ends with some in-jokes for us readers related to Annabeth from the Percy Jackson books. This book is a little longer than the Percy Jackson books and a little more tedious. It seems things are a matter of life or death for the world, yet they are just average dudes responsible for it.

The Hammer of Thor: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book 2

Magnus Chase is on a mission to find Thor's hammer. He is in our world, but there are plenty of things from the world of the Norse gods involved. (Normal people don't see them.) There is a visit to giants. Both sides are using tricks to beat the other side. Eventually, the "kids" win out. There is plenty of illusion and shapeshifting going on. This goes in conjunction with a gender fluid kid. They do more trickery to attempt to get the hammer back, but still run into troubles. Time for the next episode. The Norse mythology here is primarily filled with trickery where wit can help overcome brawn.
