Critter tries to help out with Christmas activities, but just makes things worse. He eats the cookies rather than make them. On Christmas morning he lets his parents sleep - by bringing his drums and toys up to their room. His heart is still in the right place.
Little Critter's This Is My Friend by Mercer Mayer
The critter has a friend that is a girl. They do stuff. Not as funny as the other friend book.
Critter wants a puppy. He trades a baseball glove for it. He promises to take care of it. The wards are extremely optimistic and positive. The pictures show a different story. While he states that puppy is doing a great job, the pictures show puppy always getting into trouble.
The critter points out the points of interest in his town. There is not much of interest in the narrative. The pictures add a bit of humor. A little frog accompanies him in many of the scenes, providing a nice balance to the story and point of interest for those following the story.
Critter and his two younger siblings go on a shopping trip with mom. Their actions are very relatable. Little sister wants everything she sees - especially candy. She runs away and manages to cause damage, even when trying to help. Eventually they go out to get a dress for sister and finally get ice cream at the end.
The kitty gets into all sorts of mischief. It does things to anger the whole family and even the dog. The fire department needs to come to rescue it from the tree (along with Dad who went up to get it.) Then at the end, Kitty scares off a mean dog and all is forgiven.
Each page has a spider and mouse that are reacting to the story and add a bit of comic touch.
Just My Friend and Me by Mercer Mayer
The critter invites his friend over. He talks about all he fun they are having together, but it seems like the friend is just taking advantage of him. He has rose-eyed commentary, even when the friend breaks his bike or doesn't help clean up. finally at the end, he is exhausted and ready for time alone. The ending then has a great visual twist, courtesy of his sister.
