On the Beach by Nevil Shute
After a big nuclear war takes place, the northern hemisphere is pretty much toast. Though it started with a small scale conflict, it soon spread, causing radioactive damage that impacted most places that were not destroyed by the initial war. Australia is one of the lost places surviving. They explore destruction in other places, but know that their end is near. One of the hopes they have is that they can go out at the same time. Even when that is squashed, a man fakes his illness to give comfort to his wife. Nuclear weapons had great potential for massive destruction. Especially during the early cold war, this was all too real.
