To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway
A fisherman rents out his services to others from his home in Key West, Florida. He rents it to various not-so-legal causes. He is ok at outrunning officials as he transports contraband and other no-so-legitimate things. He meets his end when he transports some Cuban revolutionaries. However, before he dies, he does take all of them out. He leaves behind a family at the end. It is a shot Hemingway book that seems right at home compared to Old Man and the Sea.
