He had various ups and downs with relationship to his role in China. It can be especially problematic when he knew there were problems with the implementation of government policies, yet he also knew that speaking up could risk is position. The book provides an interesting exploration of the rise of Mao and post-Maoist China by focusing on one person who was involved in the history in prominent, but not dominant positions. His son would go on to be the leader of China.
