The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
Kids can take a special test which may give them great future opportunity. The test takes place in phases and is shrouded in mystery. The children that pass are bright orphans and other kids estranged from their families. Since their patron is Mr. Benedict, they name themselves the Mysterious Benedict Society.
Their mission is to infiltrate another society which is using children to help infiltrate the thoughts of people and control their minds. They use their training to gain knowledge as well as pass it on to Benedict. This society also recruits special kids. Things get weird as there seem to be clones of people they know there. The leader turns out to be a long-lost twin of Benedict. They manage to succeed and save the world.
I do wonder how they decide that their side is the right one? Could it just as well be that the other is in the right?
The story and the narration is in a subdued, pseudo-erudite, almost documentary style that fits the subject matter well.
