Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse
During the dust bowl, times were tough. A girl lives with her pregnant mother and father. Her father is s struggling farmer who has struggled with drinking. He leaves kerosene sitting near the stove which ends causing a fire, killing her mother. The girl tries to help herself as dad struggles. Eventually, they make peace together as dad finds a new woman and they are willing to make a new family. The book helps bring out the ways that everyone suffered during the dust bowl and depression.
