May B. by Caroline Starr Rose
The author claimed this was influenced by the Little House on the Prairie books. May B. wants to be a teacher, but she has dyslexia and has trouble with reading and writing. She takes a job as a servant for a family that is moving out to the frontier (in the 1800s, this is Kansas). The family works on the house. The wife doesn't like it. She says she is going to go for a visit, but she leaves a note saying she is going to go find a way to take the train back home. Her husband goes out to find her. May B. is left alone. They don't come back. She survives on what remains and tries to live on her own. It is a short book that tells a story of the frontier and isolation.
