A colony lives in the outer banks of North Carolina. It is not clear if this is post-apocalyptic or alternate history. It doesn't really matter. It is set in a familiar location, but with limited technology. Sailing ships are normal. A gun is seen as a special technology. People have elemental abilities. In the bok, a boy discovers what he has as he tries to rescue his parents and avoid pirates. The story prods along at a fairly slow pace, and is not very engaging.
