The Way We Live Now

The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope

There are a multitude of characters in A Way We Live Now who are involved in various romantic and financial schemes. Some characters are up to financial shenanigans that include forging documents. One character commits suicide. There are various attempts at matrimony (including with people that may be otherwise committed.) It feels like a cross between a sitcom and a soap opera. I was at first surprised by the railroad investments. It felt like it was too early to invest in railraods, but late 1800s would have been the time of railroad booms. The ending felt like it kept going on. People were about to get married and live happily ever after. Then more happened. I guess we should expect something like that for very long books.
