The Longest Journey by E.M. Forster
As I was reading this book, it seemed to be focussing on a starving artist who was having trouble getting his work noticed. There was plenty of commentary on boarding schools vs. day schools and the evolution of schools for the poor to be ones catering to the wealthy. There were also people reaching untimely deaths. Then I read the summary on wikipedia and realized there must have been a lot that I missed. Some of can be subtle. I reread a part where the main character dies trying to save someone from getting run over by the train. These type of "key" life points pass by quickly without much foreshadowing or follow up. It is easy to miss the plot as the book focuses more on character development.
