Black Beauty is a book told from the point of view of a horse. Black Beauty has a number of different masters. Some were kind to their horses. Others were not so much. Those that treated the horse nicely tended to have the most success with raising them. Those that were incompetent in horse care, cruel or cheaters did not have good luck. The horse had other horse friends, and saw them suffer based on the condition of the owners. Black Beauty was lucky to mostly have good owners. Even the cab driving experience was great due to the great owner. (The owner focussed on treating both man and animal well, along with taking sufficient time off. This actually did better than those that never took a day off.) The story helps bring out a sympathy to the life of horses, while also providing a picture of the time when horses were a primary means of transport.
