The Blood Trials: The Blood Gift Duology, Book 1

A girl's grandpa was a great military hero, but then he died mysteriously. She thinks something is up. She wants to find out. Her group of cadets is almost done with training. Those senior to them perform some of the worst hazing around, which generally involves trying to kill them. 

We also find out the fantasy element of special blood healing ability that it has. There seems to be something special in her ancestry.

The book is filled with violence and profanity with aa bit of romance on the side. Even with the book being set in some distant galaxy, the people seem to have the exact same stereotypical negative problems with race and gender that our society has. (A black woman is at the the bottom of the scale in military groups.) The book ends with a big mission where the girl had to make important decisions for herself.
