Calpurnia Tate lives in central Texas around 1900. The society is very traditional southern. (All her brothers are named after Texas "heroes") She is expected to become a housewife when she grows up. Her grandpa is a scientist. Together, they discover a new plant species that they send it off to the Smithsonian to be cataloged. Then they ring in the new century with rare snow in Texas. It is a nice tale with today's values interspersed with those of the late 1800s.
