China Mountain Zhang is the Chinglish version of the main character in this "novel" collection of short stories set in a near-future world. The United States has gone through a depression and great cleansing and is now dominated by China. Zhang is a gay half-Chinese, half-hispanic engineering tech. His ability to speak fluent Mandarin is an asset as is his genetic engineering used to look "pure" Chinese. He manages to take some "hardship" positions that give him greater opportunities. However, he prefers to teach engineering in a local college. At a time he is also set up with an ugly daughter of a foreman. In another story, this daughter has face surgery, but the experiences with other boys is not great. The world is a curious post-economic crash Communist utopia with all its warts, but the focus is more on the individual life than the world.
