I can never seem to get into fantasy books. The books tend to be long, and the characters all meld into one for me. They typically take place in some far away land somewhat rooted in reality, but with many differences.
Children of Blood and Bone mixes things up a little bit. The action is in Africa with some places that can be identified. The quest here is to restore magic. Some people have suppressed it. Others want to restore it. There is some magical way to do it. There is a great deal of violence as everyone fights.
The point of view changes regularly. However, the audiobook was narrated by a single person. Multiple narrators would have greatly helped in distinguishing the characters.
In the end the author said that this was a work meant to condemn police violence. The connection did not seem obvious to me. However, like most fantasy books, I found it difficult to get engaged with any of the characters.
